Consciousness  ·  Neurofeedback

Training brain rhythms, honestly.

The brain cannot feel itself. Neurofeedback gives it a mirror. What the training does, what the evidence supports, and what it is not.

The mechanism

Feedback for an organ that has none

Most organs report on themselves. You can feel your breathing, sense your posture, notice your pulse. The brain is different: it monitors everything else, and has no sense that reads its own global activity. Neurofeedback closes that gap from outside.

The setup is simple. Electrodes record your EEG. Software watches for a target pattern, for example stronger alpha. When the pattern appears, the system signals, a pleasant tone, a brightening image, and when it fades, the signal fades. Through that reinforcement loop the brain gradually learns to produce more of the rewarded pattern. The principle is operant conditioning applied to brain rhythms, and it has been studied for over half a century.

The claims market

What the evidence supports

Intensive clinic programs built on alpha training, some running five to seven days, claim to compress decades of meditation into a week. The evidence supports something narrower and still interesting.

Intensive alpha training can help people recognize what an alpha-dominant state feels like from the inside, encourage relaxation and inner focus, and give objective feedback on otherwise subtle inner states. Whether it can accelerate access to meditation-like experiences is suggested by some programs; results vary between individuals.

What it is not

It is not a shortcut to anything, and it is not a replacement for guidance, ethical practice or therapeutic care. Claims should be evaluated carefully, and the ones worth trusting are attached to data. When a program promises enlightenment, transformation or IQ, ask to see the controlled studies behind the specific claim. Programs that answer honestly tend to have modest answers.

If you try it

Questions worth asking

Neurofeedback is a measurement and training instrument, useful exactly to the degree its claims stay attached to what the amplifier can actually see. Three questions separate the serious operators from the rest. What specific brain pattern is being trained, and why that one for you rather than a protocol off the shelf. What change is measured, and against what baseline. And what the published evidence shows for that protocol in that population.

Our own interest in the instrument is the same as our interest in every measurement on these pages. We will describe any consciousness programme of ours when there is a specification, a measurement, or a result to describe. Until then, this page is exactly what it looks like: the state of the field as we read it.
