What the traditions describe, and what the EEG sees.

Meditation changes the balance of brain rhythms. The contemplative traditions mapped the states those changes rhyme with, long before electrodes.

The practice

What meditation does to the EEG

Different meditation styles show different EEG signatures, and the common trends are consistent. As the mind settles, alpha and theta often grow stronger. In long-term practitioners, alpha rhythms at rest tend to be more stable, entry into meditative dominance quicker, and gamma increases sometimes appear in advanced meditators. These are population findings with wide individual variation.

The subjective arc is familiar to any practice: ordinary mind runs fast, fragmented, beta-dominant inner talk. As attention settles on its object, the chatter thins, alpha and theta deepen, and awareness is described as quieter and more spacious. The EEG watches this happen from the outside.

Two lenses, held apart on purpose

An EEG records electrical patterns, not enlightenment. Calm, open awareness correlates with stronger alpha; drowsy imagery with more theta. Inner experiences cannot be reduced to a frequency band. The neuroscience lens measures patterns and tests mechanisms. The contemplative lens describes inner landscapes and their ethics. The point is not to force them into one system but to let each illuminate the other.

The maps

Samadhi, gradual depth

In Patanjali's eight-limbed yoga, samadhi is the eighth and final limb: meditative absorption in which the meditator, the object of meditation and the process of meditating are described as becoming one. The mind's fluctuations fall quiet and the sense of a separate I softens or dissolves. Some traditions distinguish absorption with a support, where the object of meditation remains, from absorption without support, described as pure awareness beyond any particular object.

Satori, sudden sight

In Zen Buddhism, satori is awakening: a sudden, decisive shift in perception, described as seeing into one's own nature. It is not gradual depth but breakthrough, arriving within disciplined practice, seated meditation, koan inquiry, daily mindfulness, and teachers emphasize it is a significant step rather than an end.

The two words name complementary emphases. Samadhi highlights stability and continuity of consciousness. Satori highlights sudden transformation of perception. Many practitioners describe both, gradual deepening punctuated by decisive shifts.

The overlap

Where the lenses meet

Research on samadhi-like states suggests correlation with high, stable alpha and theta activity, and with changes in the networks that carry self-referential processing. The data on sudden insight states are limited, because those experiences are hard to time and reproduce in a laboratory. Hypotheses about them involve rapid shifts in network connectivity and synchrony, sometimes in alpha and gamma, with some studies confirming parts of the picture.

In both routes, cultivation involves repeated calming of discursive thought and strengthening of relaxed, focused awareness. Alpha may reflect those common processes even where the interpretation of the resulting state differs across traditions.

The traditions themselves are explicit that the rhythms are not the goal. Ethics, discipline and insight are. A measurement that respects that boundary is the only kind worth taking, and it is the only kind we make.

Training the rhythms

Whether brain rhythms can be trained directly, and what that does and does not buy you, is the subject of the neurofeedback page.
